Generator Temperature Sensor Circuit
Diagnostic & Technical Explanation
Code P0A36 sets when the control module detects an implausible reading from the thermistor embedded in the generator (MG1) stator winding — unlike the drive motor, the generator runs a narrower duty cycle dominated by engine-start and charge-blending events, so the plausibility check compares the reading against recent generator torque commands rather than sustained propulsion load. The most common physical causes are the same embedded-lead fracture and pigtail corrosion seen on drive-motor winding sensors, plus a generator run at unusually high torque during repeated engine restarts, which can produce a genuine local hot spot the thermal model doesn't expect. Because the winding lead is potted in place, a failed sensor almost always requires opening the generator housing rather than a simple external harness repair.
These 5 diagnostic trouble codes share one
detection mechanism and one repair path, which is why MechanicDB groups them into a single
authored fault family rather than repeating the same explanation 5 times.
