1. Grant

Upon payment of the license fee, you are granted a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable license to:

• use the dataset internally for any lawful purpose (analysis, research, ML training);
• integrate the data into your own applications, products, and services, including commercial ones (OBD-II tiers: OBD-II apps, hardware dongles, AI mechanic co-pilots, shop management and repair-estimate software; Heavy Duty: fleet telematics platforms, diesel shop software, heavy-duty inspection apps, and J1939 repair-estimate tools), provided the dataset itself is not the product being resold;
• create and distribute derivative works (visualizations, models, aggregated statistics, app features) built on the data.

2. Restrictions

You may not:

• resell, sublicense, publish, or redistribute the dataset (or a substantial portion of it) as a standalone data product, whether raw or trivially transformed;
• share the download files outside your organization;
• remove or misrepresent provenance information (SOURCES.md, and LICENSE-upstream.txt in the Standard and OEM Complete tiers).

3. Upstream attribution obligations

• Standard and OEM Complete tiers: DTC code-to-definition mappings are compiled from a public, MIT-licensed compilation of SAE J2012 / ISO 15031-6-derived trouble codes. The upstream MIT license and copyright notice are preserved in LICENSE-upstream.txt inside this archive, as required, and must be preserved in redistributed derivative databases.
• Heavy Duty tier: SPN/FMI fault pairs, OEM fault codes and controller assignments are facts taken from fault-code documents the manufacturers publish. Each row's source_url and source_doc identify its document, and SOURCES.md lists every source. Descriptions, explanations, fault families and fixes are written in DataEngineered's own words (a parameter name may match the manufacturer's own plain name); no sentences from OEM documents, and nothing from the SAE J1939 Digital Annex or J1939 DBC files, are included.
• Repair procedures, fault-family explanations, difficulty ratings, and cost ranges are DataEngineered's own editorial content grounded in standard diagnostic practice. Cost and labor figures are estimates for typical US aftermarket parts and independent-shop labor — not quotes.

4. Safety disclaimer

Repair steps are educational reference material, not a substitute for the vehicle manufacturer's service manual. High-voltage (hybrid/EV) and SRS/airbag procedures must only be performed by qualified technicians following the manufacturer's lockout and de-energization procedures. If you surface repair instructions to end users, you are responsible for presenting equivalent safety framing.

5. No warranty; limitation of liability

The dataset is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. Diagnostic content is informational and not professional repair advice. DataEngineered's total liability is limited to the amount you paid for this license.

6. Termination

This license terminates automatically if you breach Section 2 and do not cure the breach within 14 days of notice. Sections 3–5 survive termination.
