System: Powertrain (P-Code)
SAE Standard (Generic)
Family: Engine Preignition Detected
Code P2D0F: Engine Pre-Ignition Above Threshold
Diagnostic & Technical Explanation
Code P2D0F (Engine Pre-Ignition Above Threshold) sets when the ECM's knock-sensing strategy detects pre-ignition (fuel igniting before the spark event) rather than ordinary detonation, a more damaging condition that can force the ECM into a limited-power strategy to protect the engine. Common causes are excessive combustion-chamber carbon deposits creating hot spots, an incorrect or failing spark plug heat range, or fuel with octane below what the engine's compression and boost require.
